Philadelphia Immigration Lawyers Discuss Catholic Delegates Seek Immigration Reform

Nine delegates from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, along with 17 Catholic priests from across the country, recently traveled to Nogales, Arizona to advocate for immigration reform.  Many illegal immigrants risk their lives each day as they cross the U.S./Mexican border and travel through an unforgiving desert, facing extreme temperatures, a lack of water, and little shelter in the hopes of gaining better opportunities for education and work in the United States. As a result, thousands of immigrants have died over the past ten years along the 2,000 mile long border between Mexico and the United States.

As part of their two day pilgrimage, the Catholic delegates visited immigrant shelters and centers along the Nogales border, attended federal deportation hearings in Tucson, and headed to the Pima County Medical Examiner’s office where immigrant remains await identification.   The visit concluded with a special Mass held along the U.S./Mexican border, sharing Communion with those on both sides of the border fence that separates the two countries.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration appealed to all Catholics to call on Congress through phone calls, emails, and postcards to finalize policies that support immigration reform.   The Catholic Migration Committee hopes to establish programs to help illegal immigrants seek citizenship and avoid deportation, but they face an uphill battle.  Republicans and Democrats in Congress are at odds over immigration reform, even though the Senate passed a bill last June.  While the House Republicans prefer to take a gradual approach to changing the current policies on immigration, House Democrats are pushing to pass the immigration overhaul bill proposed by the Senate.
