Crisis at the U.S. Border: Immigrant Children Illegally Entering our Country Alone

There is an immigration problem that is currently looming large and the topic of many news stories.  The issue at hand is thousands of immigrant children entering the United States unaccompanied.  According to officials, over 52,000 minors without guardians have been detained at the Texas/U.S. border in the last nine months.   Moreover, Border Control agents are so consumed with managing the influx of unaccompanied children in the Rio Grande Valley that a majority of the border is left unattended and vulnerable to dangerous weapon and drug traffickers.

President Obama recently held a meeting with local politicians and religious leaders in Dallas, Texas to discuss the issue of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S. border.  The President has requested $3.7 billion to address the border crisis.  Mr. Obama is appealing to Congress to support his proposal to adequately tackle the increase of alien children illegally entering the U.S.

Republicans do not support President Obama’s funding request.  In fact, the Republican Party is pointing fingers at Mr. Obama’s policy on immigration as a contributing cause of the border problem.  Detractors claim that the President is responsible for allowing immigrant children to remain in the country illegally.

President Obama has indicated that he may order the deployment of the National Guard to aid with the border crisis.  Ultimately, the President has indicated that the only lasting solution to the problem at the border is for Congress to approve sweeping immigration reform.  Regardless of the actions taken by the White House or Congress, it is clear that something drastic needs to be done to aid with the vast numbers of immigrant children in this predicament.
