Trump’s Bid to End DACA blocked by Supreme Court, a Big Win for “Dreamers”

Posted on

The Trump administration’s attempt to dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that protects undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children, was ultimately rejected by the Supreme Court. Those who are affected by this legislation are known as dreamers and represent over 650,000 people. The Supreme Court rejected this proposal with a 5-4 decision, the second defeat in recent weeks for the Trump administration. The issue of immigration has been a prominent discussion throughout Trump’s presidency and the 2020 presidential election. This Supreme Court decision could remedy the ongoing immigration discussion despite President Trump’s displeasure regarding the decision.

Former President Barack Obama initiated DACA eight years ago to protect immigrants born in the United States and to fix the country’s immigration system. Obtaining citizenship can be extremely difficult and a lengthy process. DACA does not provide a direct path to citizenship but it can offer temporary status that blocks deportation. This program also allows dreamers to work or attend school. DACA recipients were ecstatic over the outcome of the attempted dismantling by the Trump administration.
