According to a study by Dartmouth College, the current H-1B visa regulations are limiting job growth in the U.S. and costing American firms thousands of dollars per worker. The Department of Homeland Security limits the number of skilled immigrant workers allowed to enter the U.S. each year under the H-1B visa program to 65,000. That means only 27 percent of the 233,000 H-1B applicants for 2016 will likely enter the U.S. workforce. As a result, many high skilled jobs will remain unfilled, thereby decreasing the productivity of hundreds of U.S. companies.
Why do we need H-1B immigrants?
The reason we have a demand for highly skilled immigrant workers is because most unemployed Americans do not have the skills many employers are seeking. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 32 percent of the U.S. population has earned at least a bachelor’s degree. The lack of qualified Americans leaves many jobs particularly in the IT and tech industries unfilled.
In addition to filling high skilled positions, immigrants generate economic growth by creating new jobs in growing markets. A study by the National Foundation for American Policy on billion-dollar startups found that more than half of the startups have been founded by immigrants. Together, these companies have a market value of $168 billion and employ an average of 760 people per company. Some examples of immigrants that have created jobs in the United States are SpaceX’s Elon Musk, Uber’s Garrett Camp and AppDynamics’ Jyoti Bansal. The National Foundation for American Policy study identified the immigrant billion-dollar startup entrepreneurs by country. India led all countries with 14 entrepreneurs, followed by Canada and the United Kingdom both with eight entrepreneurs, Israel was next with seven, Germany with four, China with three, France and Ireland both with two and 12 other countries with one.
