Immigrants’ rights groups recently filed a complaint with the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contending that detainment of immigrant women and children after they have fled their home countries causes considerable psychological damage to them. They cite cases wherein psychologists have documented effects of such detainment in the form of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. The American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Women’s Refuge Commission and the American Immigration Council filed the complaint with the DHS based on psychological observations of 10 children. The detainment centers in Pennsylvania and south Texas serve over 6,300 women and children.
United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials assert that the conditions were pre-existing and were not caused by the detainment. The immigrants experienced horrific conditions in their home country such as rape, ethnic persecution, gang violence and domestic abuse which understandably caused severe trauma to them. Moreover, ICE states that regression behavior observed by a small number of children cannot substantiate an overall determination of causation.
According to ICE, the agency takes the health and welfare of undocumented immigrants seriously and the detainment centers maintain the family unity as they wait for immigration proceedings or for deportation. The Texas facilities boast recreational and educational provisions such as soccer fields, gymnasiums, libraries and classrooms.
