Philadelphia Immigration Lawyers Report President Obama Announces Executive Action for Immigration Reform

President Obama addressed the nation last evening and announced his long-awaited plan for immigration reform.  The President has passed an Executive Order which permits an estimated five million undocumented immigrants to remain in the U.S. for three years.  The Executive Action delays deportation for many immigrants who pay taxes and do not have a criminal record.

The President’ plan also addresses the following:

  • Allowing immigrants who have children born as U.S. citizens to remain here for an extended period of time.
  • Delaying deportation of legal permanent residents who have resided in the U.S. for at least five years.
  • Increased support for security and procedures at U.S. borders to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the border.
  • A focus on keeping nuclear families together.
  • Deportation efforts focused on removal of immigrants with criminal records.
